One nice thing about Drupal is that there are a large number of themes that you can choose from. But when I first started learning Drupal, I found the sheer number of themes listed at www.drupal.org/project/themes to be overwhelming. I spent hours scrolling down the page and viewing screenshots and demo sites. There was no way to sort them and I didn't know which one to choose.
Since then, I have read various blog posts and viewed some online presentations so I am more familiar with some of the more popular ones:
These are my top 5 - OK 6:
1. Blue Breeze - nice light blue theme. My colleague changed the colour to green for this site: http://www.surdelgirlssoccer.bc.ca/dru/
2. Wabi - nice re-colorable theme (like Garland theme)
3. Marinelli is my current favourite. It features around 6 large photos in the header. Click on the menu buttons at the top and you will cycle through them all. The photos are beautiful. See Marinelli Live Demo.
4. Pixture is cool. It has rounded corners for blocks and is used on ubercart.org
5. Nitobe is amazing and works for Drupal 6. Sadly, there's no version available for Drupal 5.x It also features beautiful photos in the header. See comments on Nitobe theme
6. Tapestry is an excellent choice. It includes a drop-down menu with rollovers and 20 different colour combinations. Haarlem Modern is my current favourite
To find these themes on Drupal.org, Go to google search box in your browser or at google.com and type:
drupal.org theme_name theme
Eg. drupal.org wabi theme
or type www.drupal.org/project/wabi
